Twinkling Star

For this year’s Build To Give campaign, LEGO has challenged people to build stars for the holiday season. For every star built and shared with the #buildtogive hashtag, they will donate a toy to a child in need.

I decided to use a few of the relative newly released metallic gold pieces to design an elegant six pointed star to sit atop our tree. Continue reading for instructions on building your own, and a video showing how I motorized it to turn it into a twinkling star.

The metallic gold pieces are not that common, but they can be swapped out easily with other colors and still look good. With all white pieces I think it makes a nice snowflake design as well.

The instructions include a basic bracket in the back to place it atop a tree, though you may need to modify it depending on what the top of your tree looks like. I’ve only tested it on our artificial tree.

I also designed a motorized version of the star, to move the ends of each point in and out in an alternating pattern, which gives it the appearance of twinkling. You can see how I motorized it in the video below, or skip to the end if you just want to see the twinkling star in action. Happy Holidays!

  1. Hi Jason. Love the look and intricate motion in this model. Could you also provide instructions for the drive mechanism?

    Keep up the great work!

  2. Another great and clever build Jason.
Was thinking you used a crankshaft system, but this camshaft solution didn’t cross my mind.
    Very neat!
    Grts, Sven.
