Swimming Shark

A couple of weeks ago, LEGO announced a new product line called Forma, which, if successful, will feature various nature themed kinetic sculptures. The first set they announced is comprised of a Technic frame and different plastic skins representing different fish. I’m not all that interested on the plastic skins, but I was obviously very intrigued with the mechanics driving the model.

Based on the videos and photos that they posted, I was able to recreate the Technic frame, and thought it would be an interesting challenge to design a brick built skin for it. I decided to build a shark, and also decorate the base with a colorful coral reef. I also made some minor changes to the mechanism itself to make the motion seem a little more natural, at least to my eyes anyway. You can see the results in action, along with a full explanation of the mechanics, in the video below.

I had a lot of fun designing the coral reef in particular, using some unique pieces and a surprising amount of food parts in the process. I’m really looking forward to what the future holds in store for the Forma line. Even if I’m not interested in the plastic skins, I can’t wait to see what cool mechanisms get developed in future sets.

  1. Well done, can you plaese tell me which are the item numbers of tubular plants thank you

  2. We really like this one. Do you maybe have a photo of the gears inside… ? That would make it much easier for us to reverse engineer it.

  3. Hi Jason, i really liked the idea when this was announced but like you was not convinced with the plastic shell option. Only a matter of time before it was brick built and your solution is great. Also a big fan of your modified head vs tail motion.
Have you put this on rebrickable?

    • No, haven’t created instructions yet. I’ll probably wait until the final version of the Forma set is released.

  4. Oh, and by the way: very cool! I like this idea like almost everything you come up with 🙂

  5. I would like to see this in the bricklink’s AFOL Designer Program. I bought the indiegogo Forma and I want to have this side by side

  6. Very cool. Can you provide the part number for the yellow half-stud crank? Thanks!
