Motorized Pop-Up Book Stand

Over the last couple of years, we’ve spent quite a bit of time at events showing people how the Pop-Up Book worked. Somewhere along the way, Kristal suggested that I really needed to build a machine that would automatically open and close it. I finally built this book stand for it to do just that.

The stand features an automatically switching ‘engine’, which oscillates an arm connected to the front cover of the book back and forth. A full explanation of how it works can be seen in the video.

  1. A certain 6 year old I know got fascinated by the mechanism. We tried to reverse-engineer it by watching the video very carefully. We ended up building something, but it’s nowhere near as good. Any chance you would post instructions?

    • It’s not high on my priority list, unfortunately, so I probably won’t have time to put them together.

  2. Jason, Ha! love the teaser at the end. Is there any more info about the awesome book at the end of the video?

    • It was the trophy book designed for the winner of the pop-up book contest they held a few months ago. We were lucky enough to get a copy as well for helping judge the contest.

  3. Simply wonderful. You continue to solve problems I hadn’t realized existed. Can we expect you to make a kit or at least instructions and parts list available? I’d love to make room in my home for this.

    • Thanks. Unfortunately, I have no plans to make instructions or put together more info for this one. There’s only so much I can do. 🙂

      • Devastating news haha. If you change your mind, I’d be happy to purchase a kit. Regardless, splendid work.
